The psychological side of knee conditions

Knee conditions such as arthritis, osteoarthritis and gout have not only physiological but also psychological causes.

Author: Dr. Elfana Suleymanova Medically reviewed

Inflammatory processes in the knee joints may indicate that a person has suppressed emotions and psychological problems.

As people age, they increasingly long for stability and begin to think about their future with fear and insecurity — as a result, they become less active both physically and socially. Suppressed fears may lead to consequences as far-reaching as serious damage to the knee joint.

In addition, some older people experience joint problems as a result of psychologically rooted conflicts with their family and children. Psychological stagnation leads a person to feel anger, rejection and sometimes hatred toward themselves and those close to them, which stimulates the production of stress hormones. An excess of these substances in the body leads to a deficiency of joint (synovial) fluid and to inflammatory processes inside the joints.

We look not at where the pain is, but at where it comes from.
