Can you stop taking vitamin D in summer?

“Doctor, I spend a lot of time in the sun in summer, so I’m stopping my vitamin D” — I hear this sentence often.

Author: Dr. Elfana Suleymanova Medically reviewed

Yes, sunlight helps the body synthesize vitamin D. But this is not always enough.

1

What does synthesis depend on?

  • Time spent in the sun and the time of day
  • The geographic latitude of the country you live in
  • Skin color
  • Age and weight
  • Use of sunscreen and clothing
2

The right way

If there is a deficiency, the most correct approach is to get tested and build an individual plan:

  • Sunlight = support
  • Testing = the real situation
  • Dose = an individual choice

The most commonly used daily doses are in the range of 1000–2000 IU, but this is not the same for everyone. In some cases, high weekly doses are prescribed under medical supervision, followed by a maintenance dose.
