Fat buildup on the upper back may actually be lymphedema

Behind swelling that looks like fat, there may be impaired lymphatic flow.

Author: Dr. Elfana Suleymanova Medically reviewed

In a patient of ours who was concerned about fat buildup on the upper back, the examination revealed impaired lymphatic flow and accumulated lymphedema. The lymphatic system was working poorly; weakness was even observed in the muscles originating from the pelvis.

  • Weakness of the pelvic muscles directly affects lymphatic flow
  • Poor posture restricts the movement of the rib cage — the lymphatic pump weakens
  • As a result, fluid remains in the tissue and looks like “fat”

This patient was prescribed rehabilitation and therapeutic exercise — the goal was not fat, but restoring lymph flow.

We look not at where the pain is, but at where it comes from.
